Welcome, and allow us to introduce ourselves! The ANVGD (“National Association of Venezia-Giulia and Dalmatia”), founded in 1947 and present nationwide, represents those Italians who were forced to escape from Istria, Fiume and Dalmatia at the end of the Second World War, under the pressure of the Yugoslav militia’s ethnic cleansing policies. These policies led to the exile of 350,000 people from all social classes, and the violent deaths of thousands of innocent victims in the foibe. Sixty years after those events, the first and second generation of the Exiles collaborate, at the national and local level, to give voice to those pages of Italian history which were hidden away for decades, silenced by the international political situation. On the heels of this struggle is the daily battle to maintain traditions and cultural values which were eradicated after exile: in this, the Association is aided by the Italian Parliament, which recently passed a law establishing February 10th as “Day of Remembrance” which, every year, brings to the public eye those tragic events, but also the values of national identity so dear to the exiles. So make yourself at home! Feel free to browse our wealth of information. And please take a minute to sign up – at no charge, of course! -for our newsletter and access to our blog.
